2017 Season - Week 19
And then there were four
Mark causes another upset as Westmorland Wolverines the number 16 seed followed up last week’s shock over number 1 seed Leamington Hedgehogs by scoring over double the score posted by number 2 seed Rhodesia Rams. In fact based on two last throw of the game TDs he scored 51 points, just the fifth time in 622 opportunities that someone has made the Playoff Scoring Hall of Fame. It’s the second time he’s made it, scoring 57 back in 2011, the second highest score in the post season ever. (In 2013 Chief scored 65 in this round). So what is Mark’s prize, he gets to face off against his brother in the Championship round as Johnnie (#3) defeated Daz (#13) 27-20. Because they had too many players the same, Daz cut Le’Veon Bell and replaced him with Mark Ingram. That cut was the deepest as Bell scored twice while Ingram didn’t score. Marcus is through after the number 5 seed beat Andy H (#8) 45-36 and he will play against his dad as the Langley Raptors (#7) upset California Dreams (#6) 37-32. So the championship round will feature the Bowden Bowl and the Cooper Bowl, winners progressing to BUMSBowl XXII.
And then there were four
After two dull one-sided home wins on Saturday how good were Sunday’s games? In the first game on Saturday Philadelphia won after Nick Foles had a 77% completion record, but they had to withstand one last charge from the Falcons. After their final drive which included Tevin Coleman runs of 7 and 10 yards (Coleman rushed 10 times for 79 yards) they faced 1st and Goal at the 9 yard line. They didn’t run again and after 2 incompletions Julio Jones caught the ball and was downed after 7 yards leaving a final play from the 2 yard line. Jones slipped as he made his cut and the timing was off with the delayed pass falling incomplete. The other Saturday game went much more as expected as despite going 7-0 down the Patriots ran off 35 unanswered points in a very one sided affair. On Sunday the first game provided the only upset of the round as the Jaguars out muscled and out scored Pittsburgh. Despite Ben Roethlisberger throwing for 469 yards and five TDs the Steelers could not overcome some very questionable play calling, three TDs and 109 yards from Leonard Fournette and a turnover free Blake Bortles. The game wasn’t as close as the final score 45-42 suggests (Pittsburgh scored a TD with one second left). But that was just the appetiser for an amazing ending to the divisional round. After taking a 17-0 lead Minnesota then collapsed and saw New Orleans take a 21-20 lead with three minutes left. Kai Forbath then kicked a 53 yard Field Goal with 1:29 remaining and put the Vikings in front again but the Saints re-took the lead 24-23 with 25 seconds left. So with 10 seconds to go the Vikings faced third and 10 on their own 39 yard line when that pass happened. So it’s Minnesota @ Philadelphia & Jacksonville @ New England in the Championship games.
