2014 Season - Week 1
20th Anniversary Teams
Welcome to the BUMS 20th season. To celebrate this momentous sporting milestone, each week an owner will get to select their 20th Anniversary All-star team based on players who that owner has had. The team will be based on our current formation of QB, 2xRB, 3xRec, K and HC with none of the budget restrictions. Johnnie will reveal his team next week. As the weeks go by owners will receive from Chief a list of all their players available. We will then create a post-season knockout tournament for all those teams supplied, details of that later… let’s enjoy the teams first.
Short-Handed BUMS
Four BUMS will be looking forward to first Trading Day as they are playing with seven players because one of their selections was cut by their team after our draft. Aaron saw his kicker Jay Feely cut by Arizona less than an hour after he took him in the fifth round, Cincinnati then cut George’s fifth round running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis and also before week 1 the Eagles cut Johnnie’s fourth round kicker Alex Henery. This Monday the Ravens released Rutgers rusher Ray Rice who was taken in the third round by Daz. This was the most disturbing cut as Rice was released (and subsequently banned indefinitely by the league) after video was released of him aggressively punching his fiancee in the face in a casino lift earlier in the year. All four owners will be looking forward to Trading Day 1 which will be held before week 5 on October 5th. Meanwhile David is also a man down as Denver receiver Wes Welker (Karori’s third round pick) was banned by the league for four weeks for failing a drug test. Make a diary note for TD1 on October 5th and also for November 9th which will be your other chance to tweak your team as Trading Day 2 will happen before week 10. After that your only changes will be to any player placed on season ending IR by his NFL team. Remember if that is a franchise player you will need to keep paying him his 2014 salary so it may be wise to keep a little money spare after TD2.
Our Favourite NFL Franchise
Every team is represented on BUMS rosters to start the season with Cleveland, Jacksonville and Tennessee having just one player apiece. There are some surprises amongst our most popular teams but all have the potential of scoring big. Philadelphia had the most drafted (8 players) but after Henery was cut they are tied with Denver and Detroit with 7 players. Cincinnati also had 7 players drafted but with Green-Ellis going they now have 6 along with Green Bay, New England, New Orleans, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. Arizona also had 6 players drafted by the BUMS though as mentioned Jay Feely was cut an hour later.
BUMS on Seats
After getting together to see six games in week one, we settle into a new format for week two. There is now a Thursday game every week on Sky (Pittsburgh @ Baltimore this week) though we are not meeting to watch it. Sunday is the usual Sky double header (this week due to Chief working, it’s at Johnnie’s) for Atlanta @ Cincinnati followed by Kansas City @ Denver. We will be at Chief’s on Monday to see Sunday Night’s Bears @ 49ers match up but then due to work and parties not meeting to see Monday Night Football when Philadelphia travel to Indianapolis.
