2013 Season - Week 1
Highest Scoring BUMS Week Ever
The BUMS returned to the regular season with a big bang, so a huge congratulations to each and every one of us as we totalled 529 points the most ever in a week. And we’ve been playing this game for 290 weeks now! During the final game we eclipsed the 521 points we totalled in week 11 of 2005. As well as being the highest total it was the best average points per owner (33.06) since our inaugural season. Three times in 1995 the owners averaged more but back then the cream of the NFL was shared by just 6 of us.
Hall of Fame In Week 1 Again
We are used to making a fast start, a BUM has made the Scoring Hall of Fame six times in week 1. This week Marcus enters the Hall for his third time after scoring a Personal Best 58 points. Last year Daz was our week 1 Hall of Famer and he went on to win the Premiership however starting fast doesn’t mean finishing top. In 2011Wayne opened with 50 and ended eighth, so a fast start is not an indication of Papas Fritas glory. Daz put up 50 in 2002 but finished fifth in the Premiership and in 1999 Dave G opened with 53 points but only finished ninth of 14. In 1995 Chief also scored 53 points but finished the season second. As Johnnie says “It’s a marathon not a sprint”.
Touchdown Barnes
Another celebration happened in the Barnes household last month where Craig and Jo saw the birth of Tabitha their first child. Very best wishes to all from the BUMS.
Perfect Peyton
The season started spectacularly for Peyton Manning last Thursday as he lit up the Superbowl defending Ravens for an NFL record seven touchdowns. He is the sixth QB in NFL history to do so and the first since Joe Kapp did it for Minnesota against Baltimore in 1969. Marcus used those 21 BUMS points to launch his big week.
Our Favourite NFL Franchise
Three perenial favourites have the most players on BUMS rosters with 7 players a piece, Denver, Green Bay and New England while Atlanta, Detroit, The Giants, San Diego and Washington have 6 each. Every team is represented on BUMS rosters to start the season with Carolina, Miami and The Jets having just one player apiece.
BUMS on Seats
After getting together to see six games in week one, we settle into a new format for week two. There is now a Thursday game every week on Sky (Jets @ Patriots this week) though we are not meeting to watch it. Sunday is the usual Sky double header (this week due to Chief working, it’s at Johnnie’s) for Minnesota @ Chicago followed by ManningBowl 2 as Denver travel to the NY Giants. We will be at Chief’s on Monday at 5.30pm to see Sunday Night’s San Francisco @ Seattle match up (broadcast on Channel 4) and then at HQ again on Tuesday from 5.30pm to see Monday Night Football (now on Eurosport) as Pittsburgh travel to Cincinnati. As always all are welcome just shout if you want in, for catering purposes.
