2012 Season - Week 1
Hall of Fame Again for Daz
We are used to making a fast start, a BUM has made the Scoring Hall of Fame five times in week 1. Daz visits the Hall for his sixth time. However starting fast doesn’t mean finishing top. In 1995 Chief scored 53 points but finished the season second. In 1999 Dave G also opened with 53 points but only finished ninth of 14, Daz put up 50 in 2002 but finished fifth in the Premiership. Last year Wayne opened with 50 and ended eighth, so a fast start is not an indication of Papas Fritas glory. As Johnnie says “It’s a marathon not a sprint”
Kicking History, Scoring Well
Last year in week 1 Sebastian Janikowski equalled the NFL record for longest field goal (63 yards) on MNF. This year David Akers bounced his 63 yarder off the crossbar and over, congrats to Aks. It was a good week for many kickers with seven of them scoring double figures. Cheryl’s Nate Kaeding and John’s Matt Bryant top scored on 16. Dave G’s Akers and Mark’s Shayne Graham got a dozen each, Robbie Gould scored 11 for AP and Stampy and Craig saw their boot boys (Stephen Gostkowski & Steven Hauschka) nail 10 points a piece. George saw his QB Matt Ryan throw for three and run for one as he notched up 15 points while Adrian Peterson (Chief), Arian Foster (Johnnie) and Julio Jones (AP) all scored twice. Gould and Jones double double helped AP jump out to a week 1 lead in the 2012 Hunt for the Papas Fritas Trophy as he totalled an impressive 47 points.
Trading Day 1
With Tim Hightower surprisingly cut by Washington at the last minute if he doesn’t find another team John will be looking forward to Trading Day 1 which is before the week 6 games on October 14th (diary note). Remember if you want to cut a franchise man you still have to pay him for the rest of his contract.
Our Favourite NFL Franchise
Three perenial favourites have the most players on BUMS rosters with 8 players a piece, Green Bay, New England and New Orleans while Atlanta have 6 as do a surprise popular team, the Carolina Panthers. Only one team was spurned by the owners, for a second year running there are no Cleveland Brown players on any BUMS rosters to start the season.
BUMS on Seats
After getting together to see six games in week one we settle into a new format for week two. There is now a Thursday game every week on Sky (Bears @ Packers this week) though we are not meeting to watch it. Sunday is the usual Sky double header (this week due to Chief working it’s at Mark’s) for New Orleans @ Carolina which is followed by Washington @ St Louis. We will be at Chief’s on Monday at 6.30pm to see Sunday Night’s Detroit @ San Francisco match up and then at H’s on Tuesday from 6.30pm to see Monday Night Football as Denver travel to Atlanta. As always all are welcome just shout if you want in, for catering purposes.
