2000 Season - Week 7
Why Wilkins ?
Jeff Wilkins, the Rams kicker was the most sort after player on Trading Day. Why ? Look at the score…St Louis 45 Atlanta 29. Having had a bye the Sunday after Chief traded for him (Chief lost his franchise kicker Mike Hollis after the second game of the season) this was Wilkins first game for the him. There are 2 conventional ways to score 45 points in the NFL 6 TD’s & 2 Field Goals (12 kicker points) or 4 TD’s, 5 Field Goals & a Safety (19 kicker points). So how many points did Wilkins score for the Chief? One, Yes One! After injuring a quad muscle on the kick-off he kicked one PAT before aggravating it further and leaving the game. He is definitely out for at least next weeks game at Kansas - Doh!! Interestingly with no kicker the Rams scored an NFL record 4 two point conversions.
Kicker Merry-go Round
On Trading Saturday Marcus made a smart move dropping kicker Pete Stoyanovich and signing Eagle David Akers as on Tuesday, Kansas getting word of Marcus’ views also cut Stoyanovich. Johnny dropped Patriot kicker Adam Vinatieri (11 points since) and signed Redskins Michael Husted only for Washington to cut Husted the following Wednesday. Throughout the double header at H’s on Sunday night Johnny was heard to say the Rams should sign Husted to cover the injured Wilkins. This is unlikely to happen as today the Rams will try out Pete Stoyanovich as they prepare to play his former team KC in the battle of Missouri. Meanwhile the kicker signed to replace Pete in KC is John’s former Franchise Kicker Todd Peterson who was cut by Seattle the last week of pre-season and cut by John just two weeks ago on Trading Day.
Daz & RB’s
What is it about Daz and his running backs. Firstly his Franchise man Robert Edwards damages his knee and misses both of his Franchise years. Now Duce Staley the man he signed on trading day to replace Edwards has gone down with a season ending injury.
Daz, Gareth (if Wilkins doesn’t get better) and Johnny (should Husted not get re-signed) will have to wait until Trading Day 2 on Sat Nov 11th before being able to replace them.
